Our Protector

In the book of Esther, we clearly see God at work in the lives of individuals and in the affairs of a nation. Even when it looks as if the world is in the hands of evil people, God is still in control, protecting those who are his.

Esther 9:20-32 introduces us to the Feast of Purim. ~ The great deliverance of the Jews was instituted as a permanent festival. The name Purim, which is taken from the Babylonian word pur meaning “lot” was chosen because Haman had actually cast lots to determine the days when the Jews would be annihilated.

In establishing the Festival of Purim, the Jews made three significant declarations as we see in Esther 9:27-29.

1. They and their descendants would never fail to observe these two days

2. They would observe the celebration of Purim within every city and province or district

3. They would never let the account of their deliverance fade from their memory nor from the memory of their descendants.

The Jews begin their celebration with a fast commemorating the date on which Haman’s evil decree was issued.

Also note that in Esther 9:31-32 the institution of Purim as a permanent festival and the guidelines that were to control it were recorded in the official records. The most important items were written in the chronicles, like when Mordecai saved the King’s life, all the previous decrees that were written, and the letters from Mordecai and Esther about Purim. Writing them in the book of chronicles showed both importance and permanence.

Let us remember the lessons we have learned throughout this study and celebrate the victories and answered prayers.  Let us remember in these difficult days that our Lord is with us always and is working behind the scenes in our lives too.
